The Invention of 'Tactics'

Squealer uses the word 'tactics' to explain why Napoleon pretended to oppose the windmill. The animals do not understand the word, but they accept it. The pigs introduce a specialized vocabulary that obscures rather than clarifies. Language becomes a tool of manipulation.
Readjustment Instead of Reduction

Ration cuts are never called reductions; they are 'readjustments.' The word softens the impact. The animals are told that they are better off than under Jones. Squealer's figures prove that production has increased, but the animals cannot verify them. The language of statistics is used to deceive.
Rewriting History

Squealer convinces the animals that their memories are wrong. They 'remember' Snowball's heroism, but Squealer says they are mistaken. The animals begin to doubt their own senses. The pigs control the narrative, and the past is rewritten to suit the present. Language is used to erase truth.
The New Slogan

When the pigs walk on two legs, the sheep are taught to bleat "Four legs good, two legs better!" The slogan is a reversal of the original maxim. It is used to drown out any protest. The sheep's bleating is a mindless repetition that blocks critical thought. Language becomes a weapon of conformity.
The Suppression of Words

The word 'Comrade' is abolished, and the farm is renamed Manor Farm. The green flag loses its symbols. The pigs remove the very words that defined the revolution. The final act of linguistic control is to make the pigs indistinguishable from humans in speech. The revolution is undone by language.
